One-year anniversary of the Greyhound bus adventure

I just realized: A year ago, I boarded an overnight Greyhound bus to Atlanta and started my cross-country odyssey. Seems like a long time ago. I look forward to reading my posts throughout the month and reminiscing. And maybe I'll finally get around to curating the photos I took and making a slideshow or something.

In other news, it looks like I'll have a bit more free time coming up, and I've got a little scratch set aside, so I could take another trip. Ride the Eurail? Hop a freighter and go to sea? All suggestions are welcome.

6/20/13 to 6/30/13

Events:
An art exhibition opening, which I don't go to nearly enough.
Opening night festivities forGasa Gasa, a new music venue on Freret. I contributed to the Kickstarter.
Watching an open-mic comedy night at Carrollton Station. Stand-up comedy is hard, y'all.
The Record Raid swap meet. I bought a Nat King Cole album, Perry Como Sings the Christmas Classics, and a Smithsonian box set of old big band jazz. Next up, a record player.

Drinks at the Bulldog (twice), New Bruno's, Philip's, Fat Harry's (now reopened), and the Half Moon. (I'm not going to link to Facebook pages for merchants anymore, only real web pages.)
Food:
An excellent burger at the Warehouse Grille, which has a kind of insane menu but is growing on me.
Breakfast at Gott Gourmet: an excellent pancake that lost a little structural integrity with all the pecans and berries.
Dinner at Mayas, a good latin restaurant on Magazine. The ropa vieja was tasty, but the duck empanadas were fantastic. Good sangria too.
Lunch at the Bon Ton Cafe. I like this place more and more. Just classic, well-prepared New Orleans cooking.
And then there was brunch on Sunday at Cafe Amelie in the Quarter. Do not go to Cafe Amelie. I should have realized that something was wrong when I looked at the menu and did not see a single thing that stood out as inventive or intriguing. For lack of better options, I ordered the banana waffle. I got a waffle with bruised banana slices on top; I could have had the exact same dish at IHOP for half the price, or at a Holiday Inn for free. I was with a big party and I could see what other people were ordering; I even tried some of the french toast, and there was just nothing going on. I don't care how nice the courtyard is, this is absolutely the lamest breakfast I have eaten in New Orleans.
